The Best Way To Clean Your Refrigerator

It is important to keep your refrigerator clean all the time. Not only is this hygienic, but also helps reduce your electricity bill. Cleaning a refrigerator may sound easy. However, it involves much more than wiping the refrigerator surfaces with a wet rug. That is why it is advisable to first understand how to clean your refrigerator before proceeding.

You need to use the right equipment to get your refrigerator sparkling clean. Some of the common tools and materials used for the exercise include:

  • Coil brush
  • Vinegar
  • Soft cloths
  • Warm water
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Sponge
  • Dish-washing detergent
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush

Step 1 — Cleaning Condenser Coils

The first thing you should do is unplug the fridge. After doing that, locate the condenser coils. They are usually on the back side or underside of the refrigerator. Use a coil brush to remove the dust and dirt that has accumulated on the coils.

Step 2 — Preparing the Detergent

Remove all preserved food from the fridge and throw away any foods that are past their expiry date. Once that is done prepare the detergent by mixing 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, warm water and a few drops of detergent. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake it up.

Step 3 — Removable Parts

Take the shelves, trays and drawers out and clean them in the sink. Use the detergent you made and scrub using a sponge. Once a unit is clean, rinse it and leave it to air dry.

Step 4 — Interior

Start cleaning the inside of your fridge from top to bottom. Use the scrub to remove stubborn stains and dry off any extra spray with a paper towel. Remember to wipe the door edges as you finish.

Step 5 — Exterior

Clean the exterior of your fridge. Spray the detergent on all sides and wipe. Don’t use any bleaching agents or abrasive scrubbing material. The best option is to mix baking soda with liquid dish soap and apply using a nylon scrub.

To finish off, wipe away the detergent with a damp towel. Leave the fridge open for about 10 minutes and then plug it back in and refill it. That’s how to clean your refrigerator.

  1. Thank You for posting this wonderful information. We are in the process of moving and the refrigerator is the bane of us all. Now, instead of slamming the fridge door in utter perplexity, we have clear and concise idea how to clean the beast.

  2. When our fridge was repaired this month, the man cleaned its coils, too. It turns out they were clogged with junk and causing the fridge to work too hard! We’ll now clean them ourselves on a regular basis.
