Hardwood floors are extremely popular and it’s not hard to see why. Hardwood floors have a lot going for them, and there are few types of flooring that have as long a lifespan either. In fact, if properly taken care of, these floors can last many decades and still be in great condition. While there are many positives to going with wood over vinyl or carpet, that doesn’t mean that this is the right way to go for everyone.

So how do you know if this the right type of flooring for you? It’s all about asking the right questions when you go hardwood floor shopping. Ask the following four questions and you will get closer to the right type of hardwood floor for your specific needs!

The first is to question the sales person about solid hardwood or engineered hardwood. What’s the difference? Solid wood floors are one solid piece of wood, while engineered floors are layered veneer. It’s still real wood, but it’s assembled in a much different manner. Engineered wood is often better for climates with a lot of change in temperature and humidity throughout the seasons since the layers make it more adaptable. Solid hardwood can be sanded and redone again and again. You’ll need to decide which is best for you.

When you’re hardwood floor shopping you will also want to ask about wood species options. Oak is very different from maple, walnut, or mahogany. Each wood will determine the difference in expense, appearance, and even durability. Don’t buy without asking about your options!

Finally, you want to want to ask about your finish options. Some hardwood floors appear extremely shiny with a strong overall sheen, while others are very understated. There are many hardwood floors that fall in between these two extremes and in all honesty this is one of those things you’ll want to see firsthand to decide which version fits your style and tastes the best.

You’ll be choosing between satin gloss and semi-gloss finishes most of the time. Spend some time on this – it’s the look you’ll be stuck with!

Ask these three questions and you’ll be a lot happier with the final results!
